Adheres to all coding and privacy policies, guidelines, and regulations. Additionally, Tumor Registrar may require an associate degree or equivalent. Requires Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential. May require Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tumor Registrar works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     Job Summary

    Collects Trauma Registry data to provide accurate data and statistics in support of trauma program operations and trauma performance improvement and patient safety program as a requirement of maintaining American College of Surgeons' (ACS) Trauma Center Verification and/or state trauma center designation requirements. Identifies patients appropriate for trauma registry inclusion utilizing established registry inclusion criteria. Identifies, codes, and abstracts records for all eligible trauma patients utilizing the trauma registry data system within the guidelines and requirements of the ACS Committee on Trauma, the National Trauma Data Standard, state and local data standards, and other applicable requirements. Maintains a high degree of data entry accuracy as well as strong organization skills. Possesses knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and medical records procedures. Participates in continuing education to gain a strong knowledge base of traumatic injuries and data quality standards.

    Possesses knowledge of software applications including Microsoft Office. Possesses knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR) and Trauma Registry database. Works with team members in remote locations using a variety of technologies. Works extensively with electronic medical records and protected health information and is required to adhere to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy and security regulations and policies related to the same.

    Qualifications

    Associate degree or certification in health care related field desired. In lieu of a formal degree, a minimum of 2 years of experience in an EMS or healthcare setting will be considered. Post secondary courses in Human Anatomy and Physiology and Medical Terminology recommended.

    Prior experience with computerized information systems preferred. Prior experience with Trauma Registry software preferred. Individual with equivalent education and/or experience will be considered.

    For ACS verified centers: Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), American Trauma Society's Trauma Registrar course or equivalent, and International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) course or equivalent within first year of hire. Maintain throughout employment.

    For non-ACS verified centers: must meet minimum requirements set by state trauma center designation standards.
