Veterinary Technician assists veterinarian with exams, surgeries, and first aid. Collects and documents case history and treatment details. Being a Veterinary Technician monitors vital signs and condition of animals being treated and provides nursing care. Takes X rays, EKG, Ultrasound, and performs various lab test including urinalysis and blood counts. Additionally, Veterinary Technician depending on state regulations, may administer anesthesia, injections, and perform dental prophylaxis, catheterization, and other procedures under supervision of a veterinarian. Instructs pet owners on how to administer medication and other animal care skills. Typically requires an associate degree. Depending on state, may require RVT certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Veterinary Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Veterinary Technician DUTIES:
-Client communication- record data on case history, provide basic education on animal care, nutrition, and medical conditions.
-Maintaining medical records and billing information. Scheduling appointments, greeting customers, preparing invoices, answering phones, making follow up calls and referrals. Experience with Cornerstone is a plus!
-Preparing and labeling medications and prescriptions.
-Blood, fecal, and urine collection
-Lab work: including but not limited to; fecal tests, urinalysis, in house blood-work, cytology preparation and reading.
-Radiography
-Prepare patients for surgery, calculating medication doses, administer intravenous and subcutaneous injections prior to, during and post procedure. Assist, monitor and record data for surgical procedure.
-Restrain and stabilize animals during exam and treatment.
-Administer medications, vaccinations, and perform routine procedures.
-Instruct clients how to administer medications and apply care at home.
Veterinary Technician QUALIFICATIONS
-Prior veterinary experience, or certificate of completion from a NAVTA approved veterinary program given priority.
-High school diploma or equivalent.
