Veterinary Technician assists veterinarian with exams, surgeries, and first aid. Collects and documents case history and treatment details. Being a Veterinary Technician monitors vital signs and condition of animals being treated and provides nursing care. Takes X rays, EKG, Ultrasound, and performs various lab test including urinalysis and blood counts. Additionally, Veterinary Technician depending on state regulations, may administer anesthesia, injections, and perform dental prophylaxis, catheterization, and other procedures under supervision of a veterinarian. Instructs pet owners on how to administer medication and other animal care skills. Typically requires an associate degree. Depending on state, may require RVT certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Veterinary Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Responsibilities:
- Assist veterinarians in providing medical care to animals
- Perform animal restraint and handling during examinations and procedures
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by veterinarians
- Collect and prepare laboratory samples for analysis
- Perform diagnostic tests such as bloodwork and urinalysis
- Monitor anesthesia during surgical procedures
- Assist with surgical procedures, including sterile preparation and surgical instrument handling
- Provide post-operative care and monitoring of patients
- Educate pet owners on proper animal care and medication administration
Requirements:
- Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent experience
- Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT) preferred
- Proficient in animal physiology, restraint, and care techniques
- Knowledge of common veterinary medications and their administration
- Experience with equine care is a plus
- Ability to perform animal catheterization and husbandry tasks
- Strong animal handling skills with a focus on patient comfort and safety
- Familiarity with aseptic technique in a veterinary setting
- Experience working in a laboratory environment for sample collection and analysis
