  • Isidore Newman School seeks a Defensive Coordinator/Teacher. This position requires a Bachelor or Master's Degree, with at least 3 years of experience in both teaching and coaching. This position will serve as a full-time teacher or full-time student support, while also serving as the defensive coordinator for our varsity football team and an assistant varsity coach for a winter or spring sport.

    The successful applicant will possess excellent speaking, writing and interpersonal skills; demonstrate strong instructional and classroom management skills; extensive knowledge in the defensive principles and schemes of football; be technologically savvy and computer literate; have an abiding interest in helping students experience academic, athletic and social growth; contribute to school activities outside of the assigned classroom or sport; possess a strong understanding of the developmental level of the students and athletes they teach; believe deeply in the value of establishing strong relationships with students while maintaining high expectations; genuinely love to work with children and other like-minded educators. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate a strong aptitude for cultural competency.

    Teaching Responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement engaging daily lesson plans that align with the academic department's curriculum and school's pedagogical ethos.
    • Foster a growth mindset among all students.
    • Communicate with parents, advisors, class deans and administrators as needed to support student learning.
    • Write clear, detail-oriented report card comments that help parents and stakeholders understand the progress of the child in our curriculum.
    • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students.
    • Implement classroom and communication practices that foster the growth of ethical behavior, social skills and excellent work habits.
    • Participate as a positive, collaborative and innovative team member who will support the mission and culture of the division of the school.
    • Model appropriate daily professional standards and ensure that students and athletes adhere to behavioral expectations of the school.

    Coaching Responsibilities

    • Demonstrate a strong acumen for coaching defense at the high school football level.
    • Plan and execute practices and game plans which meet the differentiated needs of our student athletes including whole group, small group and individual instruction.
    • Possess the ability to coach linebackers/secondary as a position coach and lead defensive game plan development and overall strategy.
    • As the Defensive Coordinator work with the entire football staff, at all levels, to ensure the defensive philosophy and strategy is aligned, taught and implemented in grades 6-12.
    • Collaborate positively with colleagues within the entire football staff and athletic department while demonstrating a consistent growth mindset. 
    • Serve as an assistant varsity coach for a winter or spring sport.
    • Facilitate the educational, athletic, and social development of the student athletes. 
    • Assess student athletes in a variety of ways, both formal and informal, and use these assessments to guide instruction for student athlete growth and development.
    • Create an environment of respect which is safe and conducive to learning.
    • Use instructional time effectively.
