Job Description for Assistant General Counsel

Assistant General Counsel assists in protecting an organization's legal interest and maintaining its operations within the scope established by law. Provides hands-on counsel to all levels of executive staff or for a segment of the business. Being an Assistant General Counsel identifies and analyzes legal issues, drafts key documents, presents clear recommendations to top management, and assures legal compliance. Assists or represents the organization in business negotiations. Additionally, Assistant General Counsel may manage the operations of legal department and/or attorneys in several legal specializations including tax, litigation, acquisitions, IP, etc. Requires a JD. Requires admittance to a State Bar. Typically reports to a top legal executive or the general counsel. The Assistant General Counsel manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Assistant General Counsel typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.
