Energy Analyst

The Role 

Bright Power is seeking an energetic, detail-oriented, motivated person to join our California team as an Energy Analyst. Bright Power serves national and regional real estate companies, primarily owners, developers and managers of multifamily housing. Energy Analysts are tasked with understanding building energy and water use to provide a foundation for a suite of energy and water management services that Bright Power provides to help our clients achieve substantial reductions in utility costs, carbon emissions and water consumption, while improving resident comfort. The work involves detailed data analysis using a variety of software tools, and coordination with and support of various internal teams. Energy Analysts are expected to be very good self-organizers, and spend much of their day looking through data, communicating, and using analysis software.
 

Ideal candidate should have:

  • Four-year college degree in Math, Finance, Economics, Accounting, Engineering, Public Policy, Business or related quantitative discipline  (or equivalent certification or experience)
  • Ability to stay organized amid many evolving projects; detail-oriented and methodical with large amounts of data.
  • Excellent planning, project and time management skills.
  • Self-motivated and self-organizing. Must show initiative.
  • Excellent data manipulation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm to work in a team oriented environment providing ideas and open feedback.


Primary tasks:

  • Analyze historical utility account information and current usage patterns to develop benchmarks for electricity, natural gas, and water/sewer consumption
  • Acts as resident utility rate expert: research and understand electric, natural gas, and water rate structures relevant to California multifamily properties
  • Perform utility tariff analysis through spreadsheet analysis and/or third party tools (Genability, Recurve, EnergyToolBase, etc.) with a goal of providing insight to energy auditors about opportunities at subject properties. Record information according to company standards.
  • Manipulate large datasets of historical client usage data to effectively identify anomalies and savings and/or bill error credit opportunities. Investigate cost and usage anomalies.
  • Calculate key performance indicators of Bright Power’s retrofit work including the savings realization rate of our projects through data analysis of using monthly and/or hourly utility bill data.
  • Communicate clearly about building performance, energy management goals, and opportunities internally with sales, audit, retrofit, software, and data teams and externally with customers.
  • Support our team of energy experts by educating yourself on energy efficiency and building science as it impacts their energy management strategies.
  • Contribute to the growth of the company by coming up with creative ways to use the data and tools at our disposal.

 

Skills preferred:

  • Experience developing and maintaining complex Excel models.
  • Experience in real estate or building operations. 
  • Experience in sustainability, renewable energy, and/or energy efficiency. 
  • Understanding of utility tariffs, rate design, interval meter data analysis, and rate switching
  • Familiarity with Genability, Recurve, and/or EnergyToolBase
  • Familiarity with SQL and/or Python.

  • Domestic Hot Water (heat pump water heaters, condensing boilers; hydronic & forced air)
  • Ventilation systems (central ventilation systems, VFDs, controls)
  • Lighting Systems (LED retrofit technology)
  • Electrical Systems (motors, controls)
  • Distributed Energy Resources / Renewable Energy (solar PV & energy storage)
  • Remote Monitoring
  • Hourly data analysis, energy modeling
