The
City of Anaheim Community Services Department seeks an experienced
Parks Services Supervisor. The Parks Services Supervisor supervises and guide the work of park maintenance employees and contractors in the installation, improvements and maintenance of landscaped areas and amenities in parks, parkways, around city buildings and other landscaped city facilities.
Candidates must possess four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the construction and maintenance of park and recreational facilities. Candidates must also posses a valid Class C California Driver's License by date of appointment and a City Fork Lift Operator Certification within six months of employment.
An ideal candidates will also possess: - Two (2) years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
- An Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in ornamental horticulture, park administration, landscape architecture, or other related disciplines.
- An IA Water Auditor certification, ISA Certified Arborist, CPSI Playground Inspector and/or DPR Certified Applicators Certificate.
- Experience with California native landscape and land management.
- Experience in natural area fire and brush clearance management including goat grazing contracts, hiking and equestrian trail management.
- Experience with aquatic/splash pad/pool equipment, operations and maintenance.
- Experience in Athletic field and turf maintenance.
The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of parks maintenance employees assigned to several parks/city locations in a geographic area of the City. Interview, select and train employees; provide and/or coordinate training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; conduct performance evaluations; recommend and implement disciplinary actions.
Provide continuous training on safety in the work place and monitor for safe work practices.
Inspects work to ensure that mowing, edging, trimming, watering, tree trimming, fertilizing, and planting has been completed according to the terms and conditions of specific contracts and departmental standards.
Inspects work to ensure that installation and repair of irrigation systems have been completed according to the terms and conditions of specific contracts and departmental standards.
Coordinates with contractors to correct deficiencies found through inspections; responds to complaints received from the public.
Assesses and evaluates the requirements for additional landscaping and/or irrigation improvements.
Monitors, inspects, and provides written reports on the progress of landscape maintenance projects, specifically the landscaping and irrigation requirements.
Provides assistance and input relative to future landscape and maintenance needs for the City's parks and landscape areas.
Prepares written reports of inspections; operates computers, radio and telephone; operates City vehicle; attends meetings and seminars as required.
Prepares a wide variety of reports and maintain records relative to crew operations and facilities maintained.
Supervises the proper operation and repair of automatic, centralized and manual irrigation systems and development of water conservation programs.
Conducts inspections of landscape installations and maintenance practices. Issues liquidated damage notices to contractors who fail to perform work as necessary.
Trains workers in and monitor the operation of motorized equipment such as trucks, scooters, skip loaders, tractors and other related landscape maintenance equipment.
Supervise the installation of minor construction projects in parks, and other related city facilities.
Maintain and monitor an adequate inventory of vehicles and other motorized equipment, tools and supplies for effective crew operation.
Meet with the public and respond to complaints, questions and concerns.
Monitors employees to insure all applicable safety guidelines and procedures are followed to insure the safety of staff and the public.
May assist with budget preparations, monitoring of unit expenditures, and with language related to landscape contracts.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Experience and Education: Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the construction and maintenance of park and recreational facilities. Two (2) years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity is highly desirable. An Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in ornamental horticulture, park administration, landscape architecture, or other related disciplines is also highly desirable. Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of turf maintenance, gardening, and water conservation; modern supervisory and training techniques; work safety practices and procedures; DAMP requirements and California Occupational Safety and Health Act (Cal/OSHA) regulations; athletic field maintenance and layout; proper operation and maintenance of landscape maintenance equipment and tools; landscape and irrigation design/construction principals; horticulture/arboriculture including but not limited to plant identification and conditions that optimize the health/growth of trees, shrubs, grounds covers, turf, palms, cycads, cacti, succulents and other plants; pesticide laws and regulations concerning safe storage and application practices; common landscape pests. Knowledge of principles of selection, supervision, training, and performance evaluation. Contract inspection and monitoring principles.
Ability to: Effectively supervise and evaluate employees; train employees in proper park maintenance techniques; schedule projects and work hours; safely operate motorized equipment such as trucks, scooters, turf vacuums, mowers, skip loaders, tractors and other related landscaped maintenance equipment; safely use and maintain hand and power tools, light equipment and motorized equipment used in landscape maintenance; conduct inspections of and evaluate the work of landscape installation and maintenance activities through city employees or contractors; read landscape blueprints; perform simple mathematical calculations; deal diplomatically with the public and resolve issues that arise; ensure a safe work environment for employees and the public; prepare clear and accurate oral and written reports; maintain records and files; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Understand and interpret landscape contracts and language.
License/Certification Required: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License by date of appointment and City Fork Lift Operator Certification within six months of employment.
