Job Description:

The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs is a State of Oregon agency with a mission to serve and honor veterans through leadership, advocacy and strong partnerships.  The Department is entrusted to assist veterans, their dependents and surviving family members in obtaining benefits entitled them through Federal, State and local programs.

The Department currently has an opening for one, limited duration, full-time Office Specialist 2 in the Aging Veteran Services Division in Salem, Oregon.

This limited duration appointment, while it may cease at any time, is expected to continue for a twelve (12) month period, on or about January 1st, 2021.  The status of this limited duration appointment will be reviewed prior to that time for consideration of possible extension and will be contingent upon the availability of funds, availability of work and satisfactory performance. 

The Aging Veterans Services Division (AVS) is a major program within the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs, providing services to the state’s most vulnerable veteran populations within Oregon.

What you will do!

This position provides specialized information and services to veterans, dependents, and their survivors. 

• Provides information and services by explaining rules and laws to walk-in clients and over a multi-line phone system.

• Completes and records orders for documents, processes mail, sends/receives/processes faxes, and provides backup and assistance to other reception staff.

• Creates files, maintains records, retrieves and distributes informational materials, compiles and sends information in response to inquiries.

• Accepts home loan payments, reviews loan accounts and advises appropriate personnel of incoming payments, generates receipts, provides home loan account information, eligibility, interest rates and information regarding the OrVets and Federal VA home loan programs.

• Maintains records, distributes information in response to inquiries, assists employees with printer and copier problems, maintains the reception area, activates terminals each morning, and makes sure the area is stocked with necessary supplies.

 What are we looking for?

Two years of general clerical experience, one year of which included typing, word processing, or other experience generating documents; OR


an Associate's degree in Office Occupations or Office Technology; OR Graduation from a private school of business with a Certificate in Office Occupations or Office Technology and one year of general clerical experience.


College courses in Office Occupations or Office Technology will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • • Ability to interpret and apply policy and procedure.
  • • Experience communicating effectively with people over the phone, in writing and in person.
  • • Demonstrated ability to self-manage assignments.
  • • Experience providing services to clients.
  • • Experience organizing and prioritizing work, to gather or exchange information.

Additional Information:
