Position Summary:

The Assistant Director for First Generation Student Success supports the administration, management, and overall success of the Office of First Generation Student Success with primary oversight of the Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars Program and the Academic Success Collaborative Network.

This position reports directly to, and works closely with, the Director of First-Generation Student Success in order to engage first-generation students in meaningful college experiences aimed at increasing the persistence, retention, and graduation rates of first-generation students. The Assistant Director of First-Generation Student Success serves as the point of contact in the Directors absence. In addition, helps first-generation students achieve their full academic potential by connecting them to appropriate resources and support programs.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Administer and manage the Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars program. This includes:

  • Collaborating with the office of Admissions in executing and managing the Kelly/Strul Ambassador Recruitment program.
  • Management of the Kelly/Strul Scholars Selection Process.
  • Facilitating Kelly/Strul orientation sessions, meet-ups, and programming.
  • Development and facilitation of the First-Generation Affinity Group curriculum and class instruction.
  • Management of the professional and peer-to-peer mentoring program to ensure participants are intentionally paired with mentors.
  • Monitoring student progress and creating intervention strategies through the Kelly/Strul Academic Success Retention Plan.
  • Communicating regularly with students and ensuring they are aware of programs that may be counted towards their curriculum requirements.
  • Developing program engagement and “touch-point” programs that align with the “17 point pathway” program structure.
  • Work closely with the assessment team to continuously review, assess, and improve the Kelly/Strul curriculum/model.
  • Additional duties as needed.

Administrative duties and responsibilities within the office of First-Generation Student Success to include:

  • Assist with the creation of campus traditions specifically for first-generation students (e.g. homecoming and graduation events).
  • Collect data within targeted programs and assist with the end of year report.
  • Lead point on the collaboration with campus partners such as Academic Advising, ACCESS, and The Center for Teaching and Learning, in order to provide resources and holistic academic support to First-Generation Students through the First-Generation Academic Success Collaborative Network.
  • Work with campus communications (e.g., newspaper, websites, information technology office, alumni office) to publicize stories about the successes of first-generation students.
  • In the absence of the Director, serve as primary lead and represent the Office of First-Generation Student Success at orientation, How2FAU, Open Houses, etc.
  • Participate in institutional, divisional, and department-wide events as needed.
  • Facilitate presentations on the First-Generation student population and associated best practices to faculty and staff.
  • Stay current on research and best practices for encouraging first-generation student success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience required.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential to success in this position.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel.

Must also have excellent customer service, organizational and time management skills.
