Scientific Researcher/Senior Scientific Researcher, Human Tissue Lab

We are looking for a self-motivated candidate to support daily operations and human tissue procurement activities in the Human Tissue Laboratory (HTL), part of the Research Pathology Department. The ideal candidate will perform the procurement, receipt, import, storage and distribution of human tissue samples -- such as formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) blocks and loose frozen tissue – on behalf of internal stakeholders to support research and drug discovery efforts at Genentech. The candidate is expected to participate actively in executing requests and interact daily with both internal and external stakeholders. Experience with standard biobanking practices and techniques is preferred. Experience with LabVantage, or other Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), is also desired. Procurement experience, especially within the human tissue and fluid space, is a plus.

Job Responsibilities:
Daily Operations

  • Work with commercial vendors, academic collaborators and other internal labs to coordinate and receive incoming shipments of human tissue samples; maintain communication with lab personnel regarding incoming shipments
  • Import digital records associated with human tissue samples (Fixed Blocks, Unstained Fixed Slides, and Fresh Frozen Tissue) into the laboratory information management system (LIMS), following established business processes and data entry guidelines
  • Label and store samples under appropriate archival conditions
  • Fulfill stakeholder requests to search for, submit for processing, distribute, and ship human tissue samples, logging such activities into the LIMS or other informatics platforms
  • Adhere to timelines regarding both routine and high-priority requests
  • Independently coordinate complex requests without direct supervision
  • Assist other lab members with routine tasks to maintain lab equipment and sample inventory
  • Additional responsibilities and/or process-improvement oriented projects as needed at the discretion of the HTL Supervisor
  • Actively participate in recurring check-ins with HTL Supervisor as well as weekly team meetings; summarize work performed on quarterly basis and present to department leadership

Procurement

  • Work with internal stakeholders such as Principal Investigators, Scientific Researchers and Pathologists to understand specific tissue procurement needs
  • Determine a selection of suitable commercial vendors based on needs above, submit feasibility request and clarify available options
  • Negotiate cost, leverage volume and other ongoing procurement (such as Oncology Biomarker Development) to obtain discounts where applicable
  • Identify and meet with new potential commercial vendors to expand the variety of samples available to HTL
  • Work with Procurement and Research Contracts to establish legal agreements with new commercial vendors that comply with Roche policies regarding human tissue use, patient consent, and privacy
  • Submit orders for approved requests, while maintaining up-to-date records into the LIMS or other informatics platforms, including request details such as negotiated terms, project status, and cost
  • Actively engage in vendor management to routinely assess vendor cost, quality and adherence to timelines; in addition, review compliance with Genentech policies and determine whether corrective action is needed; schedule in-person meetings to meet and share recent changes at Genentech in addition to learning about new vendor capabilities

Job Requirements:
 

Education
BA/BS in anatomy/physiology, biology, molecular biology or related discipline

Experience

  • Three or more years of relevant experience in clinical, academic or industry setting
  • One year or more of biobanking experience preferred
