A Patient Service Representative is a highly trained person with specialized skills who functions to manage the needs of infusion patients in a geographical team with a pharmacist. This includes maintaining appropriate levels of DME patient and nursing supplies and monitoring usage, scheduling and setting up deliveries, obtaining information and communicating with patient care team to meet patient needs and to help resolve incidents, performing prescription and supply order entry as well as documenting pertinent information. The patient service representative will obtain information such as weight, changes in medication profile and other information and relay it to the pharmacist, and will identify client issues that require consultation with a pharmacist or nurse. The patient service representative is a vital member of the pharmacy team. The candidate will participate in product and supply selection and decisions and inventory control. The candidate will also help resolve billing issues and will facilitate working with the billing office. The patient service representative will also work with the intake team to facilitate new patient referrals. Other duties include the development of supply templates, streamlining courier service processes and delivery processes, assembling DME patient charts and start of care packets, checking ancillary supplies, performing IV admixture, and/or picking and packing supplies and deliveries—when needed and other duties as assigned.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent education with college courses including chemistry, physiology, and algebra desirable.
Experience
Completion of a recognized pharmacy technician-training program desired.
At least one year experience as a hospital pharmacy technician is preferred.
At least one year experience in home infusion is required.
At least one year experience in customer service is required.
California Pharmacy Technician License is desired.
Certification through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, Inc. desired.
Knowledge
This position requires knowledge of medical terminology, pharmaceutical generic and trade names, pharmaceutical calculations, and laws and regulations relating to the practice of pharmacy.
Working knowledge of a hospital & home infusion pharmacy is desired.
Skills
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to read and interpret physician orders.
Patient Service Representatives are also required to have skills which consist of typing ability, basic computer operation skills; performance of sterile parenteral procedures using proper aseptic technique, including use of vertical and horizontal air flow hoods; and proper handling and disposal of potentially hazardous chemicals or working knowledge of warehouse function, flow, and inventory control.
