Sets up and operates one or more grinding machines both manual (centerless) and CNC to grind external cylindrical surfaces of metal work-pieces to blueprint and work order specifications.
Job Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other tasks and duties may be required as directed.
- Read and understand all router instructions for each grinding sequence and evaluate production and setup standards immediately after starting and establishing the actual time standards.
- Follow dispatch list for next job priority.
- Reads blueprint and work order for product specifications, such as dimensions, tolerances, and number of parts to be ground, and tooling instructions, such as grinding speeds, feed rates, holding fixtures, and grinding wheels to be used.
- Mounts grinding wheel and regulating wheel on spindles with wrenches.
- Dress wheels to specifications, using dressing device.
- Moves controls to set specified grinding speeds, feed rates, and spacing between wheel faces. Positions and secures work rest at specified height, using wrenches.
- Lifts and positions work manually or with hoist, and secures it between wheels and on work rest.
- Set-up CNC grinders.
- Starts machine and observe operation.
- Verifies dimensions of groundwork-piece for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers. and preset gauges.
- Inspects, measures parts and records data to maintain statistical process control charts.
- Change worn grinding wheels using wrenches.
- Ability to operate at .0001 inch tolerances
Qualification Requirements
Education/Experience
- High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED); and one to three years related experience and/or training.
Language Skills
- Good command of the English language, both written and spoken.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of supervisors or employees.
Math Skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Skills
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer/ Technical/Office Skills
- Basic windows/internet browser
