This position is primarily evenings Mon-Sat. Up to 20 hours/ week.
The Friends for Life program is a non-profit respite service that offers temporary care of individuals with developmental disabilities for that purpose of providing relief to the parent. Respite can be performed during the day, evening and weekend hours for programs at the YMCA or in the community.
The Direct Care Worker provides relief to the family member from the ongoing care of a loved one with developmental disabilities. The DCW places emphasis on recreational activities, appropriate socialization and activities of daily living.
Roles and Responsibilities
· Attend all assigned programs and events (on time and prepared). Hours are currently during the weekdays. Shifts range from about 2-5 hours long. We anticipate resuming early evening and weekend shifts in the near future.
· Participate in all staff meetings (attendance is mandatory)
· Provide supervision to participants and Direct Care Workers while at program, ensuring their safety and will being
· Encourage active participation of staff, volunteers and participants in all activities
· Develop positive working relationships with parents and coworkers
· Provide timely, complete, legible and accurate documentation of required information in participant Case Notes and RDRIS forms
· Provide supervision or direct care services for participant swim instruction and aquatic programs
· Comply with all HIPAA, OPWDD, OIG, OMIG, DOH, FSS, HSBS Waiver regulations
· Comply with the Oswego YMCA/Respite Program guidelines, policies, procedures, and agreements
· Provide transportation services, when needed, and follow all traffic laws while operating the Respite Program vehicle
· Assist in planning and implementing program activities and special events
· Facilitate inclusive opportunities, for participants, whenever possible
· Model positive behavior for Direct Care Workers and Respite participants
· Promote positive decision making with participants
· Maintain current CPR, AED and First Aid certification
· Maintain communication with the Respite Director, serving as a liaison between families and managers
· Possess a general understanding and knowledge of medical, psychological and physical implications of developmental disabilities
· Provide care and structured activities in relation to the respite participants goals, needs and capabilities. This should include recreational, educational and socially appropriate activities.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
· High School Diploma (some college education preferred)
· Excellent Communication and Writing Skills
· Prior experience working with people with developmental disabilities is preferred
· Knowledge of Health and Fitness
· Valid Driver’s License – Clean record
· Complete fingerprinting and background checks

· Provide inclusive YMCA and community activities available to all participants
· Create a safe environment that promotes independence and normalization for developmentally disabled people
