What are the responsibilities and job description for the Court Reporter position at Patent and Trademark Office?

This position is located at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), Board Operations Division, Office of the Board Executive. PTAB conducts trials under the American Invents Act, decides appeals from adverse decisions of examiners concerning applications for patents, conducts interference proceedings and makes final determinations in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as to questions of priority and patentability.

Qualifications:

You must meet the United States Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) qualification requirements (including specialized experience and/or educational requirements) for the advertised position. Specialized Experienceis experience that has equipped applicants with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the federal service. For this position, the next lower grade level is a GS-07.

Specialized experience for this position includes:
  1. Experience providing official written transcripts of legal proceedings in support of internal/external customer.
  2. Experience transcribing and maintaining accurate record of legal, judicial, or appellate hearing proceedings.
  3. Experience utilizing stenography or other computer-aided transcription equipment, microphones, recording devices, audio and video equipment.
A Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification, Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR) certification and/or Certified Realtime Captioner (CRC) certification is preferred.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Responsibilities:

The physical worksite for this position is located in Alexandria, Virginia. This position is telework eligible per agency and business unit discretion/policy.

  • You are highly skilled with utilizing automated systems and software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • You have the ability to prepare all transcripts verbatim from the agency's oral proceedings with an excellent command of the English language.
  • You have the ability to provide assistance to the public and answer questions from a variety of inquiries.
This is a term position not to exceed 2 years. This appointment may be extended without further competition to the maximum of 4 years.

Salary : $64,957 - $84,441
