MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
Two years of full time or equivalent part time paid experience in the operation of automotive equipment used in road construction and/or maintenance activities; or
Five years of full time or equivalent part time paid experience in the operation of tractor-trailer trucks or tandem dump trucks.
NOTE: Appropriate vocational education and/or training may be substituted for years of experience on a year-to-year basis. Equivalent experience using agricultural equipment will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S)
Possession of a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver License is required for appointment and must be maintained on a continuous basis throughout the term of appointment.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for the operation of one or more types of light automotive equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, streets, and rural highways. The work also includes other related public works activities that utilize automotive equipment such as those performed at a landfill site or on other municipality-owned property. Incumbents in this class perform a variety of manual tasks connected with equipment operation and/or depending upon the specific project being undertaken. Work is carried out in accordance with well-established and accepted standard procedures for safe and efficient equipment operation and task completion. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-ranking employee or supervisor with some leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in the performance of those duties that are routine and/or follow well-established procedures. The incumbent receives more detailed instruction and closer supervision in the case of new or more difficult assignments. Direct supervision may be exercised over the activities of Laborers or other subordinate employees on particular assignments or projects. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
· Operates a truck for the application of sand/salt on icy roads; for the transportation of stone, gravel, supplies, and other materials; and for the removal of snow, brush, refuse, and other items associated with public works activities;
· Operates a truck or tractor with snow loader, snow plow, or other attachment;
· Operates light automotive equipment such as loaders, rollers and backhoes used in road, street, and rural highway construction, repair, and maintenance activities;
· Operates a variety of auxiliary equipment including compressors, cement mixers, stump cutters, post hole diggers, chippers, and chain saws;
· Operates mowers in the cutting of grass or brush from roadsides and public places;
· Operates a truck in connection with the hauling of materials for road or park construction and repair activities or for other public works activities such as those performed at a landfill site or transfer station;
· Operates a bulldozer, grader, excavator, or other automotive equipment as assigned provided the operator meets the special requirements to operate said equipment;
· Cleans streets with a power sweeper;
· Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment and maintains it in a clean, job-ready condition;
· Reports equipment malfunctions immediately to supervisors;
· May operate yard or field equipment such as a stone crusher, conveyors, or loaders;

· Performs a variety of manual labor tasks such as loading and unloading trucks, digging ditches, cutting trees and brush, flushing sewers, cleaning culverts and catch basins, raking blacktop and cleaning the shop;
· May supervise Laborers or other subordinates as specific projects dictate; and
· Other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
