Senior Research Scientist

Position Description

United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) is seeking an experienced health equity researcher to join a passionate and multi-disciplinary team of biostatisticians, public health researchers, data scientists and behavioral scientists working to support the organ transplant community through innovative research. The Senior Research Scientist will provide analytic leadership in the areas of health equity and population health evaluation. The ideal candidate is creative, well organized, excited by multi-disciplinary collaboration, and an excellent scientific communicator.

Key Responsibilities:

• Research highly complex health issues and review published literature for new opportunities to advance transplantation knowledge.
• Develop methodologies for studying existing and proposed Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) policy changes, with an emphasis on studying health equity within the system.
• Translate research findings to clear, timely, and actionable insights for stakeholders
• Develop research in the areas of health equity, social determinants of health, and public health trends relevant to the field of organ transplant and organ failure.
• Support the development of organ allocation policies that create a equitable and efficient system.
• Collaborate with other researchers and transplantation professionals on research, presentations, and publications.
• Provide ongoing mentoring, coaching, and development to research staff to manage highly complex transplant related research.
• Collaborate with a diverse group of cross-functional peers and stakeholders (e.g., biostatisticians, software engineers, data scientists, policy, communications, marketing, grant writers, external funders) in the preparation of analytic results in the form of data and written reports, manuscripts, and visualizations for professional meetings, system integration, and broad public consumption.

Minimum Requirements

8 years of epidemiology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or other related research experience required.

Critical Skills

• 5 years of research experience in the areas of organ donation and transplantation or chronic disease is preferred.
• Demonstrated track record of managing and leading research studies is required.
• Strong theoretical foundation in analytical methods is required.
• Expert knowledge of statistical methodologies or operations techniques is required.
• A strong record of publication is required.
• Experience in health equity, healthcare policy, or public health research is preferred.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Must have demonstrated ability to do independent research.
• A strong record of publication is preferred.
• Competence in R programming is required, SQL and Python are of interest.
• Must have demonstrated ability to do independent research.
• Must be self-motivated and able to work independently and within teams.

Education

Advanced degree in Epidemiology, Data Science, Operations Research, Health Services Research, Biostatistics, Health Economics, Bioinformatics, or related field of study, or equivalent work experience required. PhD highly desired.
