Summary Description
Under the general direction of the Director of Facilities, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for the supervision of all life safety aspects of the outdoor pool areas. The Head Lifeguard works diligently to uphold and enforce all policies set forth by Woodside.
Duties / Responsibilities
· Supervises the daily safety operations of the pools; including staffing and scheduling of all lifeguards
· Ensures cleanliness of the outdoor pool operations including furniture, fixtures and equipment and maintains cleanliness of Pool House office area and related storage closets
· Coordinates and works with Swim Team Manager on issues with pools, participant safety and other areas relevant to swim team practices, meets, special events, etc.
· Walks and commands the pool deck – even when not on stand, always aware of activities
· Performs outdoor pool area tours regularly and reports service/repair issues to the Director of Facilities
· Ensures opening and closing of the pools per procedural checklists
· Acts and responds as needed to any incident or injury and provides accurate documentation, as required
· Skims, brushes and vacuums pools, as needed
· Performs regular bathroom checks a minimum of every 30 minutes to ensure that they are clean, supplied and in good working order
· Required to assist in teardown and setup of all pool furniture as needed for swim meets, special events, and any other activities
· Provides additional assistance to Pool Utility staff by clearing used towel and refreshing supply of clean towels
· Refills water containers when empty; clears dishes and trash accumulation in all pool areas
· Ensures that all pool equipment is stored safely and that any lost & found items are kept in a secure location
· Enforces pool and pool area rules and regulations to ensure a safe and professional environment for all members, guests and staff
· May at times be asked to support special events within Club
· Moves throughout the shift with purpose; no personal cell phone usage during shift
· Follows all procedures and remains compliant with all Woodside safety and security protocols
· Complies with Club’s employee handbook manual, departmental policies and procedures and with all applicable federal and state employment laws
· Completes all other duties as directed/assigned
While on Stand
· Maintains continuous surveillance of all members / guests in the pool
· Monitors all swimmers and pool participants to ensure that all follow safety protocols and rules of the pool
· Continuously scans the pool and surrounding areas for potential hazards and take proactive steps to help avoid accidents
· Readily responds to drownings or injuries by providing appropriate first aid and/or CPR care and treatment aa needed until emergency medical services arrive to takeover
Job Standards
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
Education/Experience:
High School Diploma. At least 1-2 years of club desk experience.
· Valid Red Cross First Aid/CPR Certification
· Must be a Certified LG by American Redcross prior to first shift
· Must be minimum of 21 years of age
· Must attend all required in-service dates, staff meetings and trainings
· Must be available to work 3 of the 4 major summer holidays (Memorial Day,
Independence Day, Juneteenth and Labor Day)
Skills:
· Ability to react to extremely difficult situations and remain calm and
effectively manage emergency situations
· Excellent skills in the application of lifeguard surveillance and all rescue techniques
· Excellent customer service skills, communication and demonstrates diplomacy
· Ability to multi-task and focus on details
· Must exhibit confidence and ability to reason and problem solve quickly
· Must be able to address situations with all age groups
· Ability to follow written and verbal commands and instructions
Knowledge:
· First Aid, CPR, AED and related emergency medical procedures
· Lifesaving practices
Licenses:
· Valid Driver’s License - or reliable transportation to and from work
Special Requirements:
· Regular and predictable attendance is required
· Ability to work special events, promotions and other demands of the position which may require early morning, late evenings and weekend hours
· Ability to work outside in extreme heat
· Ability to move 50 or more pounds on a regular basis
· Ability to communicate well in English
Working Conditions/
Safety Hazards:
· Outdoors 95% of the shift in direct sunlight
· High volume of people, majority children
· Mid to high noise levels
· Handling of pool chemicals
· Climbing up and down guard stand
