Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs) are not physicians; rather, they are highly trained non-physician professionals who play a crucial role in the Anesthesia Care Team (ACT). CAAs work alongside anesthesiologists to provide anesthesia care, ensuring patient safety and comfort during surgical procedures. Their training includes a master's degree in anesthesia, which equips them with the necessary skills to assist in the administration of anesthesia, monitor patients, and respond to any complications that may arise. While they are integral to the anesthesia process, CAAs do not have the same level of training or authority as physicians, and their practice is always supervised by a licensed anesthesiologist. This collaborative approach enhances the quality of care provided to patients undergoing surgery.
