Becoming a CCHT requires a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of a dialysis certificate program, which can be found at community colleges, vocational schools, and online programs. These programs typically last twelve to eighteen months and cover the operation and maintenance of dialysis machines, as well as background information on renal disease and emergency procedures like CPR. It‘s important to research your state‘s specific requirements for becoming a dialysis technician before enrolling in a training course. The Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC) is the only provider of the CCHT certification, which requires at least 3,000 hours of work as a dialysis technician and thirty hours of continuing education. Certification must be renewed every three years.
