A sole proprietor cannot issue themselves a W-2 form because, in the eyes of the IRS, they are not considered an employee of their own business. Instead, the income earned by a sole proprietorship is reported directly on the owner's personal tax return using Schedule C, and the owner pays self-employment taxes through their individual tax filings. While a sole proprietor can hire employees and pay them wages that are subject to withholding taxes, they themselves do not receive a W-2, which is typically issued to employees. Instead, the owner’s income is considered self-employment income, and they are responsible for paying self-employment taxes directly to the IRS.
