Throughout history, the rank of five-star general has been awarded very sparingly and is considered one of the highest military honors. In the United States, for example, only a handful of individuals have been promoted to this rank, including notable figures such as General George C. Marshall, General Douglas MacArthur, and General Dwight D. Eisenhower during World War II. The rank was created to provide a clear hierarchy among the most senior military leaders during times of large-scale conflict, and it is typically awarded during wartime or in recognition of extraordinary military leadership. Outside of the United States, very few countries have officially used a five-star rank, making it an exclusive designation held by a select few individuals in military history.
