A physician extender is a broad term used to describe healthcare professionals who support physicians in delivering patient care, including roles such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants. While physician assistants (PAs) are a specific type of physician extender with a defined scope of practice, the term 'physician extender' encompasses multiple roles that extend a physician's capacity to provide care. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are also considered physician extenders, as they are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage patient conditions independently or collaboratively. Therefore, although all PAs are physician extenders, not all physician extenders are physician assistants. The term highlights the supportive role these professionals play in healthcare teams to improve access and efficiency in patient care.
