ASEM was founded in 1979 at the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). The Society was the brainchild of Professor Bernard R. Sarchet, the first Chair of the Engineering Management Department at UMR with the support and encouragement of Chancellor Merl Baker. Professor Sarchet is largely credited with establishing the first true engineering management department at a U.S. university, and he has two prestigious national awards named in his honor. These include the Bernard R. Sarchet Award presented by the Engineering Management Division of ASEE for lifetime achievement in engineering management education and the Bernard R. Sarchet Award presented by ASEM for the advancement and support of engineering management. ASEM has grown from its early days at UMR to become a national society that "speaks for the profession of engineering management. Members include academics from engineering management departments and closely affiliated departments such as Industrial engineering as well as engineering management professionals from a wide variety of high technology industries. ASEM members enjoy many benefits that enrich their professional lives. Regular and student members and corporate partners are engaged in "promoting the development and practice of the engineering management profession" through: Professional meetings and conferences, Networking, and Publications. ASEM provides a certification program for MSEM degree programs similar to the ABET program for undergraduate engineering degrees. It also provides an engineering manager certification program for individuals interested in validating their skills and capabilities as engineering managers. The role of product management spans many activities from strategic to tactical and varies based on the organizational structure of the company.
