Birdsall & Co., founded in 1988, has become one of the finest home and garden shops in the nation. Recognized in a number of national magazines, the store's customers appreciate aesthetically pleasing, unique, quality products. Birdsall & Co. is named after maternal ancestors of its owner, John Ludwig who grew up in New Jersey watching and learning gardening from his parents and grandparents. He went west to attend college and graduated in landscape architecture. After twenty years of working in design, traveling the world, and running his own design/build landscape firm, he opened Birdsall & Co. The business originally focused on fine garden tools and implements. Soon a plant nursery was added that specialized in shade perennials. As more land and building space were acquired, the inventory expanded to include pots, statuary, fountains, teakwood furniture, and interior design items. Eventually the plants were squeezed out as the demand for other products increased. The store started with a mere 500 sq. ft. of showroom space. Over the years it has expanded to 3,700 sq. ft. of interior display with an additional 8,000 sq. ft. of exterior exhibits. The original building has expanded and now includes the sunroom that is enclosed during the winter months. Three additional buildings, the Gardener's Shed, World Gallery, and the Patio Room, are on the perimeter of the garden yard. Birdsall & Co. not only sells fine products and offers personalized customer service, but experienced staff members can answer questions not only about the attributes of our product lines but also landscape design and landscape construction.

What Skills Does a person Need at Birdsall & Co?

At Birdsall & Co, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Customer Service: Customer service is the provision of service to customers before, during and after a purchase. The perception of success of such interactions is dependent on employees "who can adjust themselves to the personality of the guest". Customer service concerns the priority an organization assigns to customer service relative to components such as product innovation and pricing. In this sense, an organization that values good customer service may spend more money in training employees than the average organization or may proactively interview customers for feedback. From the point of view of an overall sales process engineering effort, customer service plays an important role in an organization's ability to generate income and revenue. From that perspective, customer service should be included as part of an overall approach to systematic improvement. One good customer service experience can change the entire perception a customer holds towards the organization.
  2. Leadership: Knowledge of and ability to employ effective strategies that motivate and guide other members within our business to achieve optimum results.
  3. Coaching: Coaching is a form of development in which an experienced person, called a coach, supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance.
  4. Merchandising: In the broadest sense, merchandising is any practice which contributes to the sale of products to a retail consumer. At a retail in-store level, merchandising refers to the variety of products available for sale and the display of those products in such a way that it stimulates interest and entices customers to make a purchase. In the profession of merchandising you are either employed by the store in which you work, or by an independent distributor. As a professional merchandiser, in a retail setting, you will not only know your products(I.e. coffee, juice, soda, etc.) but you will gauge other “vendors” like products as you tend to your job. Working with the store and other merchandisers, shelf space is often given or taken as need be in some locations(for some young merchandisers this is known as “war”) In retail commerce, visual display merchandising means merchandise sales using product design, selection, packaging, pricing, and display that stimulates consumers to spend more. This includes disciplines and discounting, physical presentation of products and displays, and the decisions about which products should be presented to which customers at what time.
  5. CVS: Concurrent Versions System (CVS) is a program that lets a code developer save and retrieve different development versions of source code.
