Boyle County was the 94th county to be formed in Kentucky in 1842 from Lincoln and Mercer counties. The county seat is Danville. In 2010 the county population was 28,432 in a land area of 180.17 square miles, an average of 157.8 people per square mile. The county is named for the renowned Judge John Boyle (1774-1834), who served in the Kentucky legislation (1800), Kentucky's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives (1803-1809), Chief Justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals (1810-1826) and was then appointed by President John Quincy Adams as a United States Judge for the District of Kentucky where he presided until his death in February of 1834. Boyle County is home to the very first courthouse in Kentucky, established in 1834.
