Christchurch School's renowned Learning Skills Program has been incorporated in our curriculum for 30 years. The Learning Skills Program is a scheduled support program for a limited number of students who have been diagnosed with specific learning disabilities or learning differences. Classes meet every other day, and serve students in a small group setting in which they receive integrated skill and strategy instruction within content lessons. Objectives of the program include improving students' ability to respond to the demands of the regular college preparatory program and helping them develop independent compensatory skills for college. Students pursue five content area courses while they are enrolled in the Learning Skills Program, and receive an elective credit for successful completion of the class. There is an additional tuition charged for program services. Participation in the Learning Skills Program is contingent upon eligibility determined during the application process and is based on the personal interview and review of a completed admissions file. Generally, students have been fully tested by learning specialists and have been recommended to the school by those specialists, educational consultants or by previously attended schools. Students receive integrated instruction and strategic tutoring in content area classes based on individual, prioritized need. The staff determines need based on student request, current grades, classroom teacher comments and psycho-education diagnostic reports. In class, students receive group instruction in study skills, vocabulary, note-taking, written language improvement and SAT review. Program staff members work with students individually and in small groups both during and after class. Students served by the program have tended to exhibit difficulties in one or more of the following areas: reading, written language, numerical reasoning, visual perceptual skills, visual motor integration, auditory processing, receptive and expressive language skills.
