The City of Shawnee offers a supplemental pension plan to employees hired prior to January 1, 2013 which allows employees the opportunity to enhance retirement benefits available under KPERS or KP&F. The supplemental pension plan was designed for a total combined retirement benefit not to exceed 85% of an employee's final average salary. Any employee not eligible to receive a benefit under this plan due to the 85% maximum limitation will receive a one-time $10,000 lump sum payment. An employee's supplemental retirement benefit is a percentage of their Average Monthly Compensation multiplied by the number of years of service with the City. Average Monthly Compensation is based on an average of the highest three of the last 10 years of service prior to retirement or termination. Currently, only those years of service since 1993 are included in the total calculation, as the plan was implemented in 1998. A year of service is any calendar year in which an employee (except seasonal or temporary) worked more than 1,000 hours. The plan was updated in 2010; revisions to the plan impacted the amount of time required to vest, the benefit multiplier, and the definition of "normal retirement age" for those employees hired after December 31, 2009. In accordance with Resolution Number 1685 adopted by the City Council, employees hired on or after January 1, 2013 are eligible to participate in a voluntary defined contribution supplemental retirement plan.
