DAC provides opportunities for individuals and families to develop as full human beings through our leadership development workshops, organizer internships, nonpartisan voter education and mobilization drives, direct action, and collaboration with allied organizations locally, statewide, nationally, and even internationally. To date, four groups of organizers from Central and Eastern Europe have visited DAC to learn about what we do and how we do it. DAC organizers and leaders have made presentations and conducted workshops nationally and internationally. More than 8,000 individuals have participated in DAC activities to date, and more than 4,600 of them have signed up as DAC members. The organization has four chapters: at the two Capuchin Soup Kitchens, St. Leo Soup Kitchen, and NOAH. Each chapter meets weekly, and everyone is welcome to attend. DAC has been invited to start chapters at two additional locations. The DAC board consists entirely of low-income individuals who use the soup kitchens on a regular basis. Founded in early 2008 at a soup kitchen on Detroit's East Side, Detroit Action Commonwealth (DAC) is a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) membership organization that develops individual and collective power to challenge root causes of poverty, homelessness, and injustice. We address issues that affect DAC members, their families, and the broader community, including conditions in homeless shelters, acquiring personal identification and birth records, interacting with the criminal justice system, housing, transportation, health care, and employment.
