Completed in 1887, the Eldridge Street Synagogue is one of the last remaining markers of the period when the Lower East Side housed, per acre, the largest Jewish community that had ever existed in the world. The synagogue stands as a striking testament to the enormous wave of Jewish immigrants from Russia, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia and elsewhere, who sought religious freedom and economic opportunity in America in the late 19th century. While other Lower East Side historic properties have been lost, the Eldridge Street Project has made significant progress in restoring and interpreting the synagogue for a broad and diverse public. The Eldridge Street Project anticipates completing the restoration with great fanfare and festivity in December 2007, the 120th anniversary of the landmark house of worship.
