GIVEWATTS makes solar charged lamps available to school children and parents at several schools in the area. The parents sign up for a lamp and leave a deposit. They then pay for the lamps in installments over a period of 2 months. Until they have paid for the lamp fully the solar panels remain in school, and the children bring the lamp to charge in the school when needed. The head teacher oversees this process, supported by a local GIVEWATTS officer. Once a lantern is fully paid, GIVEWATTS will be able to distribute a new one lamp to a school child and the same procedure can be repeated. This cycle is repeated and over time the number of lamps multiplies hence benefiting more school children and their families. New empowering technology is introduced, a local demand is allowed to form, and the impact keeps increasing. We monitor the project every 6 months for over 2 years, where the main focus is to follow up on the expected impact of the solar lamp to the household as a whole. We call this the GIVEWATTS model. Project Schools: With the support of this funding, GIVEWATTS has made solar charged lamps available at several schools in Mwanza Cluster.
