Crafts from Japan is a sister company of HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts, based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Our family business started over 60 years ago in Kahului Maui by my grandmother, Shikano Kamitaki, who came over to Hawaii as a picture bride in the early 1900s. My father, Tadami Kamitaki expanded the business, and opened Ben Franklin Stores on other Islands. The business has continued with our generation, and we now have 6 Ben Franklin Crafts throughout Hawaii. I started doing Kimekome dolls several years ago as a hobby, going to classes at Moiliili Community Center taught by Mrs. Masako Ogawa. She introduced me to the Sakura Horikiri store and I became very interested in their Kimekome patchwork and Netsuke charms. I thought we could sell these craft kits in our stores, and also felt we could sell other kits with a more contemporary design which might appeal to the US market. We now have 2 unique kits of Onigiri (or Musubi) and Lucky Frogs, thanks to our partnership with Sakura Horikiri. In Hawaii, we call Onigiri, Musubi and eat it at many family gatherings and picnics. The Lucky Frog has a pocket for its mouth where you can insert a coin. In Hawaii, having a frog with a coin in its mouth is good luck for money, and many people who gamble at Las Vegas can use it as a lucky charm. We hope you enjoy making our craft kits from Japan, and plan to continually expand our product selection with different kits.
