India-West is one of the oldest and largest Indian media conglomerates in North America. It is also the most honored, having received no less than 50 awards for excellence in journalism during its last 40 years of operation. India-West was established in 1975 by Ramesh and Bina Murarka, both Stanford University graduates, as a weekly print publication to cater to the needs of the Indian expatriates settled in the U.S. It experienced a rapid growth since it was the only Indian publication which highlighted the achievements of the Indian community in the U.S. While doing so, it also began to address issues affecting the new immigrant community, such as assimilation into mainstream America, the importance of getting involved in local government bodies as well as the importance of seeking political office. India-West did not shy away from addressing the unpleasant issues either, such as spousal abuse, which led to the establishment of the first hotline and subsequent shelter for abused women and their families. In 2010, India-West saw the rapidly growing popularity of the worldwide web and decided to make its presence felt on the internet as well. The website www.indiawest.com was launched, followed by a mobile app in 2011. The website rapidly began to draw visitors because of the plethora of content it made available to the Indian community - not only in the U.S., but in several other countries as well. The website today regularly attracts visitors from the U.S., India, Canada, U.K. and even Pakistan.
