Lauritzen Gardens received a grant from the Nebraska Watchable Wildlife Program to support revitalization of the Oberman Bird Sanctuary. Situated in the garden near the Missouri River riparian zone and composed of seven landscaped areas representing major Midwestern plant communities, the four-acre sanctuary provides an outstanding and easily accessible bird-viewing site for visitors. To enhance the attractiveness of the sanctuary to birds, feeders are placed at intervals along a paved quarter-mile-long walking loop that takes visitors through the area. Most of these feeders had deteriorated after having been in service since the sanctuary was established in 1999. Grant funds were used to purchase eight new feeders for the sanctuary in 2015. More than 120 species of birds have been observed in the garden, including 20 different species of warblers. With the recent launch of our new Conservation Program, Lauritzen Gardens is focusing more attention on interpreting and managing the biological diversity and ecological assets of the 100-acre property. We aim to become better known as a destination for knowledgeable birders, plus serve as an entrée to birds and birding for the more than 200,000 visitors that enjoy the garden each year. Revitalization of the Oberman Bird Sanctuary is a key component of this effort. The Watchable Wildlife Grant Program is funded through the Nebraska Wildlife Conservation Fund and administered by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to help develop watchable wildlife and nature based experiences in Nebraska.

Tactics used in this process include formal meetings, lectures, videos, printed materials, or computer-based orientations to introduce newcomers to their new jobs and organizations. Research has demonstrated that these socialization techniques lead to positive outcomes for new employees such as higher job satisfaction, better job performance, greater organizational commitment, and reduction in occupational stress and intent to quit.. These outcomes are particularly important to an organization looking to retain a competitive advantage in an increasingly mobile and globalized workforce.
