Longwood also provides technical rescue to our area in cooperation with the Chester County Technical Rescue Task Force. We currently operate as the Lead Rescue Company for Confined Space, a support Company for Rope/High Angle Rescue, and are a part of the Southern Water Rescue Task Force. Our new vehicle was also designed to support our fire ground operations as well as our Rapid Intervention Team. This new vehicle was designed with a large body to accommodate the variety of equipment we are required to carry, but allowed us to shorten the vehicle to negotiate the many tight and narrow roadways in our area. We look forward to the delivery of this vehicle, allowing us the possibility to continue providing superior rescue services that our residents have grown to appreciate. This vehicle was partially funded with a $300,000 grant from the Longwood Foundation, a $174,000 contribution from Pocopson Township and proceeds from the sale of our 2001 Pierce.

What Skills Does a person Need at Longwood Fire Co?

At Longwood Fire Co, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Life Support: Life support refers to the treatments and techniques performed in an emergency in order to support life after the failure of one or more vital organs. Healthcare providers and emergency medical technicians are generally certified to perform basic and advanced life support procedures; however, basic life support is sometimes provided at the scene of an emergency by family members or bystanders before emergency services arrive. In the case of cardiac injuries, cardiopulmonary resuscitation is initiated by bystanders or family members 25% of the time. Basic life support techniques, such as performing CPR on a victim of cardiac arrest, can double or even triple that patient's chance of survival. Other types of basic life support include relief from choking (which can be done by using the Heimlich maneuver), staunching of bleeding by direct compression and elevation above the heart (and if necessary, pressure on arterial pressure points and the use of a manufactured or improvised tourniquet), first aid, and the use of an automated external defibrillator.
  2. Patient Care: Patient care refers to the prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of physical and mental well-being through services offered by health professionals.
  3. Medical Emergency: A medical emergency is an acute injury or illness that poses an immediate risk to a person's life or long-term health, sometimes referred to as a situation risking "life or limb".
  4. Advanced Life Support: Advanced Life Support (ALS) is a set of life saving protocols and skills that extend basic life support to further support the circulation and provide an open airway and adequate ventilation (breathing).
  5. CPR: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combines rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth) and chest compressions to temporarily pump enough blood to the brain until specialized treatment is available.
