Students also have the chance to apply and deepen their learning through hands-on projects at the Maplehill Community Farm. Whether they are applying mathematics concepts to garden planning, learning biology through animal chores, or discovering the history of the region through community projects with the local senior center, Maplehill students are nurtured to develop their interests, skills and talents through a wide range of activities and community connections. Maplehill School enrolls and serves both male and female students, who are between the ages of 12 and 22 in grades 7-12, in one of its two programs. The Small Group Program, which can serve a maximum of 20, and maintains a maximum student teacher ratio of 1:5, provides an educational therapeutic day program for students who need to reconstruct behavioral patterns along appropriate societal norms so that they can complete requirements for a high school diploma or to demonstrate their capacity to return to a less restrictive learning environment. Using both emergent curriculum and backwards design, teaching staff design academic activities to help students improve their academic skills in alignment with Vermont Standards and to make learning as meaningful as possible for students.
