Memphis Rox is a nonprofit, pay what you can, climbing gym located in the Soulsville community directly across the street from STAX Museum and Academy. The 32,000-square-foot facility includes state-of-the-art 15-foot bouldering walls, 45-foot top-rope and lead walls, a full-service fitness area, and a juice bar. Those without the monetary means to climb have full access to Memphis Rox in exchange for volunteering at the gym or at a local charity. Memphis Rox is part of the One Family Memphis organization that was created by Tom Shadyac as a way to help revitalize the South Memphis neighborhood and the Memphis community as a whole. Shadyac, a writer and film producer famous for producing such comedies as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor, Patch Adams, and Bruce Almighty fell in love with Memphis while teaching at the University of Memphis and LeMoyne-Owen College.
