In 1981 Hackensack Hospital, now known as HackensackUMC established a paramedic program as a result of the pilot program conducted at the Hackensack Fire Department through the State of New Jersey. This allowed for expansion of services throughout the county. The Dispatch Center called "Hackensack" was created. As other hospitals joined the program and placed their MICU's into service, they were dispatched by Hackensack. After several years the Dispatch Center was renamed "MICCOM" (Mobile Intensive Care Communications). In 1993 MICCOM was relocated out of the Medical Center to an office building in Totowa and was designated as a Public Safety Dispatch Point (PSDP) specializing in Emergency Medical Dispatching. MICCOM continued to grow by increasing its services to the hospitals it serves and Municipal clients as the EMS System continued a rapid growth over the past several years. By 2011, MICCOM had doubled its size and call volume. In July of that year, MICCOM moved into a new office space in Hackensack, New Jersey. MICCOM's new Communications Center cost 1.4 million dollars to construct. It contains a seven position Motorola MCC5500 Radio Console equipped with 84 channels and patching capabilities, an integrated Plant Vesta E-9-1-1 System, and a Tier 3 Computer Aided Dispatch Computer System. MICCOM has a state of the art communications network that is comprised of multiple point to point T-1 circuits with channel banks. The network covers five counties in the northern top of New Jersey which is over 1500 square miles bordering New York and Pennsylvania. In 2012, MICCOM added Air Medical Communications with the addition of a medevac helicopter to HackensackUMC. The operational area for the helicopter is a 100 nautical mile radius of its base in West Milford, New Jersey. This increases the coverage area of the Communications Center to include New York State, Pennsylvania, New York City, Connecticut and Long Island. What Skills Does a person Need at Miccom?

At Miccom, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Medical Emergency: A medical emergency is an acute injury or illness that poses an immediate risk to a person's life or long-term health, sometimes referred to as a situation risking "life or limb".
  2. Patient Care: Patient care refers to the prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of physical and mental well-being through services offered by health professionals.
  3. Customer Service: Customer service is the provision of service to customers before, during and after a purchase. The perception of success of such interactions is dependent on employees "who can adjust themselves to the personality of the guest". Customer service concerns the priority an organization assigns to customer service relative to components such as product innovation and pricing. In this sense, an organization that values good customer service may spend more money in training employees than the average organization or may proactively interview customers for feedback. From the point of view of an overall sales process engineering effort, customer service plays an important role in an organization's ability to generate income and revenue. From that perspective, customer service should be included as part of an overall approach to systematic improvement. One good customer service experience can change the entire perception a customer holds towards the organization.
  4. CPR: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combines rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth) and chest compressions to temporarily pump enough blood to the brain until specialized treatment is available.
  5. Troubleshooting: Troubleshooting is a form of problem solving, often applied to repair failed products or processes on a machine or a system. It is a logical, systematic search for the source of a problem in order to solve it, and make the product or process operational again. Troubleshooting is needed to identify the symptoms. Determining the most likely cause is a process of elimination—eliminating potential causes of a problem. Finally, troubleshooting requires confirmation that the solution restores the product or process to its working state. In general, troubleshooting is the identification or diagnosis of "trouble" in the management flow of a system caused by a failure of some kind. The problem is initially described as symptoms of malfunction, and troubleshooting is the process of determining and remedying the causes of these symptoms. A system can be described in terms of its expected, desired or intended behavior (usually, for artificial systems, its purpose). Events or inputs to the system are expected to generate specific results or outputs. (For example, selecting the "print" option from various computer applications is intended to result in a hardcopy emerging from some specific device). Any unexpected or undesirable behavior is a symptom. Troubleshooting is the process of isolating the specific cause or causes of the symptom. Frequently the symptom is a failure of the product or process to produce any results. (Nothing was printed, for example). Corrective action can then be taken to prevent further failures of a similar kind.
