At State Voices, we envision an America that provides fairness and opportunity to all citizens. That means having a democracy where every person is engaged and every person's voice is heard. We work to make that dream a reality. The State Voices network supports creative ways to mobilize and empower people across the country so their voices are heard and their participation assured in the public sphere, particularly those who are underrepresented. We call this "civic engagement" - actively engaging Americans in the decision and policy-making processes that impact their lives, their communities, their states and their country. Our network is comprised of state tables - networks of grassroots organizations in the states that come together to plan their nonpartisan civic engagement work, support each other, and share ideas, tools and resources. They embody the notion of "power in numbers" and also the power of permanency. These aren't loose coalitions that spring up around elections or coalesce around certain issues. They're permanent collaboratives. They work together year-round, every year because our democracy works year-round, every year, too. State tables provide a strong foundation on which grassroots organizations build their nonpartisan civic engagement work. They connect organizations across issues and communities, infuse them with resources, and get cutting-edge organizing technology into their hands. Through their efforts, this critical work to engage Americans is becoming stronger and more sophisticated. Our national organization supports and convenes the 22 state tables in our network. We focus on four areas: building the capacity of our tables and their partners, providing them with innovative tools and technology, driving resources into their states, and developing strong partnerships between grassroots organizations in the states and those working at the national level. By strengthening our tables and their partners, we work to make on the ground civic engagement efforts more efficient and effective.
