The Welders was conceived and created in 2013 by a collective of Washington, DC playwrights who sought a way to empower local writers, and was a clarion call for writers to create by taking the power into their own hands. The Founding Welders developed a list of what they want their members to embody. They wanted The Welders to have: A genuine desire to create and belong to a collective; A sense of humor, a positive disposition, and enthusiasm about collaboration; A commitment to diversity and gender parity in the theater; A commitment to connecting with DC audiences and roots in DC theater; The availability and stomach for (and experience with) self-production; A body of work we all admired; and An understanding of the significance of playwright-driven initiatives within the current theatrical landscape.
