    Summary:
    Reporting to the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost serves as the campus' chief academic and research officer. The VCAA/Provost provides leadership for mission-driven academic and co-curricular endeavors and functions, coordinates academic affairs initiatives and programs with other campus divisions, directs activities surrounding the implementation and achievement of the academic mission, and actively participates in coordination of campus budget and planning activities. Serves as a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet and Administrative Council. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost serves as the chief administrative officer of the campus in the Chancellor's absence.

    Duties & Responsibilities:


    • In partnership with the associate vice chancellors and associate provosts, deans and faculty, fosters intellectual growth, student learning, and scholarly and creative activities by providing academic strategic planning, administrative leadership, direction, evaluation and assessment for all academic activities and faculty affairs at the University; providing leadership in the advancement of scholarship; and providing leadership and guidance on diversity initiatives for faculty, staff, and students.
    • Implements the strategic academic vision by authorizing faculty appointments; recommending all promotions and tenure decisions to the Chancellor; working closely with associate vice chancellors and associate provosts, deans, Provost Office staff and faculty in implementing and evaluating major academic, student support, and research initiatives; working closely with the Vice Chancellor for Enrollment & Retention Management on recruitment, retention, and enrollment management initiatives and with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs in addressing extracurricular priorities and support for students; and collaborating with other senior leaders at UIS, the UI System’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, the vice chancellors for academic affairs of the other two UI universities, and other UI administrators on system-wide initiatives.
    • Contributes to an inclusive work environment and university culture that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or ideologies to create a positive culture and diverse environment. Work closely with faculty leadership and other campus constituencies to develop, implement, and communicate academic priorities, strategic directions, and plans.
    • Ensures an active and expanding dialogue with external constituencies by encouraging university partnerships with external constituents and public organizations in collaboration with IIN and DPI, engaging in effective university advancement (including alumni affairs, fundraising, and advocacy on behalf of the institution), and facilitating alignment with the mission of the University.
    • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required.
    • Manages the operations of the Provost Office including oversight of the budget for Academic Affairs.
    • Contributes to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Earned doctorate at an accredited institution of higher education
    Academic credentials consistent with the rank of professor


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    An established record of successful university-level teaching
    Substantial record of scholarly achievement that would qualify the candidate for appointment at the rank of professor
    Experience in senior-level leadership at the level of dean or higher at an accredited institution of higher learning or of comparable scope and complexity, with proven strengths in strategic
    Demonstrated record of developing, implementing and sustaining innovative policies and programs that foster excellence in teaching, research, and service in higher education
    A record of consultative leadership
    Demonstrated capabilities in strategic planning, academic policy-making, budgeting, and management in higher education
    An understanding of emerging technologies and effective application in teaching and learning
    Demonstrated experience in recruiting, developing, retaining, and evaluating a diverse pool of faculty and professional staff
    Ability to communicate effectively with a wide and diverse audience of internal and external constituents that includes engagement with those of other cultures and backgrounds
    A collaborative, collegial, accessible, and transparent management style
    Successful experience in advancing diversity and inclusion in terms of faculty/staff hiring and curriculum development
    Ability to effectively manage and lead a diverse professional staff in a fast-paced, complex, data-driven administrative environment
    Experience with collective bargaining
    Demonstrated experience in using data to make sound decisions and foster improvements
    Unquestioned integrity, exemplary interpersonal and communication skills, and a passion for educating students and preparing them for successful and productive lives


    Travel Requirements:
    20% Expected to attend 6 Board of Trustees meetings per year.
