Licensing Manager oversees the licensing of employees responsible for the sale and marketing of insurance, loan, or investment products. Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations; maintains all necessary records. Being a Licensing Manager manages license acquisition and renewal processes. Establishes databases or recordkeeping policies and strategies to track the status of agents, applications, and forms. Additionally, Licensing Manager may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Licensing Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Licensing Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     General Summary
    Works with Children’s research and clinical faculty to assess and market innovation arising from their research; negotiates the transfer of Children’s innovations technology to corporate partners for product development. Manages portfolio of intellectual property and works with outside patent counsel; makes considered investments in BCH patents/patent applications. Negotiates industrial sponsored research projects. Develops commercialization strategies for Children’s intellectual property assets and negotiates complex arrangements for commercialization of those assets.

    Principal Duties & Responsibilities
    • Receives, processes and organizes innovations from multiple departments/programs at BCH.
    • Analyzes research support; discerns consequences to innovations of such support.
    • Assesses commercial potential of a technology and conducts a standard evaluation focused on: strength of IP, stage of technology, market potential and other tangible/intangible attributes.
    • Works with outside patent counsel and coordinates activities with internal Operations Group on a portfolio of patents/patent applications; communicates IP issues to Department Chiefs and researches in a convincing manner, leading to go/no go decisions in order to be a good steward of BCH resources.
    • Provides excellent service to faculty and is an ambassador for the office within hospital.
    • Manages complex relationships with faculty.
    • Intellectual Property and Deal Valuation: With minimal support from supervisor, evaluates relative value of intellectual property and to value such intellectual property in transactions with corporate partners.
    • Negotiates, drafts and manages simple agreements (NDAs, MoUs, IIAs); communicates issues to researchers and third parties; negotiates these agreements independently; works closely and cooperatively with TIDO's Contracts Group.
    • Develops business strategy and negotiating terms for Term Sheets, Options, Sponsored Research Agreements and Non-exclusive and Exclusive Licenses with minimal supervision by senior management; works closely and cooperatively with TIDO's Contracts Group.
    • Communicates professionally and works in an environment with multiple stakeholders.
    • Manages complex relationships, both internal and external.
    • Develops commercialization plans for major assets in an IP portfolio; including documenting the process by which a new product or service may be introduced into the market, taking into account the developmental needs of the technology, production requirements, financial projections, market analysis and other factors required to achieve commercial success.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Ability to understand broad areas of life sciences research.
    • Ability to discern commercial potential from life sciences research.
    • Knowledge of patent law.
    • Proficient in applying knowledge of commercialization process to development of commercialization plans.
    • Ability to interact effectively with researchers, company’s representatives, outside patent counsel.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal in order to persuade and negotiate with others. Ability to build strong relationships with industry.
    • Proficiency in use of databases, Microsoft Office and other project management software.
    • Strong multi-tasking ability.
    • Strong scientific/technical ability.
    • Strong analytical skills to resolve complex problems involving science, law, and business, within the complex framework of an academic medical center.
    • Ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships.

    Requirements:
    • 2 years of direct experience in scientific/technology evaluation, business development/marketing, patent examination or similar required.
      Bachelor’s with some life Science is required.
    • Advanced Degree in science, business or (law with a Science degree) is preferred.
