  • Duties

    • Receive materials and equipment, record, and place items in proper storage.
    • Verify and sort materials by scrap identification.
    • Load and unload recycling scrap material for shipment.
    • Weigh material and determine the proper scrap classification.
    • Operate gasoline, battery, or gas-electric powered tractors.
    • Track the volume of material and ensures correct item and quantity for shipment or issue.

    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • Employee required to take pre-appointment physical.
    • Job requires heavy lifting, subject to extreme weather conditions, and requires wearing protective clothing/equipment.
    • Employee required to possess a valid driver's license.
    • Employee required to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operator Certification.
    • Employee required to obtain Demilitarization (DEMIL) certification within the first year and maintain certification annually.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

    Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Materials Examiner and Identifier ~ without more than normal supervision. Follow procedures, sort materials by type, and operate forklifts and motor vehicles. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
    • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Assignments require prolonged working in tiring and uncomfortable positions, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and pushing and pulling material. Incumbent frequently manually lifts and carries supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds for identifying and segregating items and positioning new items, cartons and cases for handling by forklift trucks.
    • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside warehouses that may be hot, cold, damp and drafty and in outside areas, i.e., dock areas, scrap yards; or other areas exposed to varying weather conditions. Is exposed to physical hazards normally associated with scrap yard, open storage, and warehouse operations including various kinds of material handling equipment and hand and power tools. Wears safety equipment as required. Incumbent must exercise precautions to avoid injury to/from carelessness of other workers in operation of forklifts and other equipment in the work area.

    • This position may be filled as a term appointment not to exceed 4 years. Term appointments may be extended up to a maximum of eight years.
