From our Lakewood, Colorado office, we execute projects across North America spanning from California to Florida and Canada down to Mexico. About your role:
This is a hands-on, full-time position with day-to-day duties that include managing a team of two (2) to ten (10) mechanical engineers within ZAP’s cement, mineral and material processing, mining, and heavy industrial projects. In addition to the technical skills required at the Engineer 3 & 4 levels, they are responsible for their direct reports in all aspects. In addition to their responsibilities with their direct reports, a mechanical engineering supervisor is responsible for coordinating with other supervisors and directors to resource projects, contribute to business development and proposals, assist with recruiting and interviewing, and creating/revising/improving department standards.
Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities:
- Team management
- Effectively analyzes resource needs, organizes, and allocates resources, as well as coordinates with Project Managers for resources and deliverable dates, and assesses resources with Project Managers to ensure allocation can fulfill the technical requirements.
- Periodically reviews project budgets and schedules, as well as facilitates periodic team meetings and participates in department meetings.
- Understands effective resourcing and department budgeting tools and how to leverage them for workforce planning, as well as participates in the full scope of candidate selection, interview, onboarding assessments, and reviewing performance metrics for the team.
- Promptly addresses and documents employee relations issues including disciplinary action, personnel or performance issues and resolves conflict by engaging Director and Human Resources
- Individual Management
- Fosters creativity and innovation while motivating employees to excel.
- Performs timely employee reviews and development plans for employees, as well as conducts individual 1on1s with direct reports.
- Identifies and sponsors training for employees, in addition to coaching and training employees and delegating responsibility to develop staff.
- Department Management and Organization
- Awareness of allocation, utilization metrics, and targets, and administering department overhead billing codes for training, standards, and staff meetings.
- Reviews and approves timesheets, in addition to tracks and approves PTO requests.
- Business Development and Client Relationships
- Participates in proposal efforts by developing budgets, identifying scope and resources, reviewing schedules, providing feedback on, or generating short/long form proposal documents.
- Facilitate handoff to assigned resource at project kickoff as needed.
- Review business development forecast with Director regularly.
- Foster and maintain relationships with existing clients.
- Plan, organize and prepare quality technical project documents to support projects. The technical documentation should be prepared in a timely and professional manner and responsive to customer needs. Responsible also for coordination of technical changes/revisions to all project documents.
- Coordinate and/or produce mechanical engineering deliverables, equipment specifications, technical descriptions and other technical inputs and documentation required for completion of the projects, as defined by the RACI model (Responsible, Accountable, Consultative, Informed), in alignment with ZAP standard processes and procedures.
- Produce equipment sizing calculations
- Prepare technical specifications or datasheets for main equipment and auxiliary machinery
- Determine / review equipment capacities and specifications for main equipment and auxiliary machinery.
- Technical reviews and evaluations of vendor proposals
- Develop and review equipment flow sheets, equipment layouts and/or systems and stackups, plot plans, and general arrangement drawings
- Manage creation of bill of materials and/or material takeoffs
- Provide feedback on equipment vendor drawing reviews
- Generate pipe and valve specifications for services such as plant air, pneumatic piping, water systems, etc.
- Generate mechanical equipment lists, valve lists, line lists
- Prepare mechanical contractor bid packages
- Participate in site visits and meetings with clients
- Engineering support of construction efforts
- Ducts and chutes routing and design support, produce datasheets for quoting and purchasing
- Feasibility studies
- Technical Collaboration - Collaborates with project team members on interdisciplinary technical deliverables, as defined by the RACI
- Reviews deliverables with peers and supervisors.
- Ensures quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures (intra- and inter-disciplinary checks) are performed on deliverables generated.
- Design Basis
- PFD/P&ID generation, review, redlining
- 3D modeling reviews and support
- Produce project cost estimates
- Reviews construction drawings and documents.
- Communicates with project team regarding overall project progress and status of mechanical-specific deadlines and deliverables.
- Develop and improve knowledge of plant or facility processes and equipment to be better able to satisfy customers’ requirements.

Education
- Bachelor's Degree required. Preferably in Mechanical Engineering.
- Professional Engineering license or 12-years of relevant experience in lieu of a license required
Type of Experience Needed to be Successful
- Minimum of 10-years’ experience practicing discipline specific engineering on multidiscipline project teams required.
