Medical Records Coding Technician abstracts clinical information from medical records and assigns the appropriate ICD or CPT codes using industry-standard coding guidelines. Assigns required DRG (diagnosis-related grouping) codes. Being a Medical Records Coding Technician works with coding databases and software to input and maintain data according to standard procedures. Performs quality audits of work. Additionally, Medical Records Coding Technician maintains and up-to-date knowledge of coding and documentation requirements. Requires a medical coding certification. The exact type of coding certification may vary based on the clinical setting or a medical specialty focus. May require an associate degree. The AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is typically required. The Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification is also a typical requirement. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Records Coding Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Supervisory Medical Records Technician

  • Duties

    • Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission standards for medical care and processing of inpatient medical records in accordance with procedures established in the Inpatient Record Branch.
    • Assist lower graded clerks/technicians in responding to unusually difficult/sensitive cases.
    • Perform record control duties, determining the validity of requests, ensuring records are loaned only to authorized personnel in accordance with established procedures.
    • Responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and accountability of medical records of active duty military, retirees, dependents, and civilians.
    • Ensure records are adequate for research and training purposes.
    • Perform quality control sampling of medical records to verify proper maintenance and to identify patterns of improper maintenance, directing correction of records where appropriate.
    • Develops and monitors the Medical Record Quality Improvement Program.
    • Ensure the compilation and reporting of pertinent medical/statistical data to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements.
    • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for the program and updates the procedures as needed.
    • Complete processing, ensure appropriate indexes are included and makes appropriate arrangements for shipment of records to the designated Military Personnel Records Center.
    • Release information from the inpatient record to patients and medical center personnel according to established procedures.
    • Plan work, set priorities and prepare schedules for completion of work, make work assignments based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of the assignments and the capability of subordinates.
    • Evaluate performance, provide advice, counsel or instructions to individual employees concerning work and administrative matters.
    • Review completed work assignments for effectiveness and contents, take corrective action by reviewing, accepting or rejecting any work that fails published standards and policies.

    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
    • This position is covered by Health Affairs Policy 97006, 23 Oct 96 the position requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B immunizations and Tuberculin testing unless exempt by physician.
    • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.

    Qualifications

    Specialized Experience:
    One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Performing medical record audits for inconsistencies and/or omissions and maintaining patient medical records in accordance with facility policy, 2) Using knowledge of medical terminology and practical knowledge of anatomy to interpret and document patient care and treatment, and 3) Experience leading a team or project.

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone-no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
