Veterinary Technician assists veterinarian with exams, surgeries, and first aid. Collects and documents case history and treatment details. Being a Veterinary Technician monitors vital signs and condition of animals being treated and provides nursing care. Takes X rays, EKG, Ultrasound, and performs various lab test including urinalysis and blood counts. Additionally, Veterinary Technician depending on state regulations, may administer anesthesia, injections, and perform dental prophylaxis, catheterization, and other procedures under supervision of a veterinarian. Instructs pet owners on how to administer medication and other animal care skills. Typically requires an associate degree. Depending on state, may require RVT certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Veterinary Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Laytonsville Veterinary Practice is a full-service clinic that provides routine and emergency care, and has been in the area for over 30 years.
A typical day ranges from routine exams, vaccines, critical cases, diagnostics, dentistry, and most surgical procedures with the exception of orthopedic and specialty procedures.
Some responsibilities of our medical staff (which varies in experience and comfort level) includes; assisting with appointments, cleaning, restraining, venipuncture and obtaining samples, running diagnostic tests in the lab, placement of IV catheters, assisting with surgery, monitoring anesthesia and recovery, performing dental cleanings, taking digital X-rays, carrying out treatment plans for hospitalized patients, and talking with clients - taking histories, going over continued care and more.
