Job Description for ECMO Technician

ECMO Technician provides respiratory care for patients receiving therapy using extra-corporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO). Performs continuous surveillance, assessment, and troubleshooting of the ECMO circuit and the patient's status. Being an ECMO Technician assesses patient's response to therapy by performing diagnostic tests and procedures including arterial blood gas sampling, oxygen saturation, end-tidal carbon dioxide measurement, pulmonary mechanics, spirometry, and metabolic testing. May assist the physician with special procedures. Additionally, ECMO Technician documents all pertinent observations related to patient care treatments, response to treatments, and all recommendations for modifications in the treatment plan. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy or equivalent. Requires certification as Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), applicable state license, and CPR-BLS certification. May sometimes require Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) certification. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The ECMO Technician work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project.
