About Certified Professional Coder (CPC)

Does having a CPC make a difference in pay and career progression?

Based on job posting data, most employers require or strongly prefer candidates to have a CPC certification. The certification gives employers the assurance that a certified candidate has attained a specific level of knowledge and skills and will be successful in the job. Note: It is possible to obtain a CPC-Apprentice certification, which is granted to those passing the exam, but with no experience. Once the mandetory 2 years of experience are completed the full CPC certification can then be awarded.

Who grants the CPC certification?

The CPC certification is offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), which is the largest professional coding association.

What are the requirements for a CPC Certification?

Typically candidates for the CPC certification have an associate degree. They must also be a member of AAPC and pass the CPC exam with a grade of 70% or higher. The exam consists of 150 questions, divided into 12 distinct sections.
To receive full certification, the CPC candidate must additionally complete a minimum of 2 years professional experience and provide two letters of recommendation.
To remain certified, continuing education is required. CPC's must complete at least 36 hours of approved Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every two years to retain certified status. CEUs may be earned by attending conferences, online courses, or other approved events.

What preparation is recommended for the CPC exam?

Online prep courses, practice exams, exam reviews, and study guides are available to prepare. Various packages of prep materials and memberships are available. The online training course covers 80 hours of the fundamentals of medical coding.
