What does a Data Architect do at companies like ACLARA?

Purpose:

Serves primarily as a senior advisor for numerous software development teams, assisting with the design and implementation of data solutions using Azure SQL, SQL Server, and Cassandra for the next generation of our Azure-based network management software.  As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), the incumbent will actively collaborate with software architects to design scalable solutions, work with developers to successfully implement those solutions, and advise/assist test teams to verify the solution meets or exceeds all functional and performance requirements. Finally, this position will be periodically called upon to assist our professional services and customer support teams with installation issues and/or production issues encountered in the field (SQL Server, Oracle, Cassandra).

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as subject matter expert (SME) to multiple development teams for database technologies, SQL, T-SQL, and CQL
  • Review and set standards for application data model development for RDBMS, Data warehouse and NOSQL data stores
  • Research, recommend and integrate emerging data technologies to support active software development
  • Document and maintain data governance standards, including availability, usability, and security for product data
  • Monitor and maintain production cloud database infrastructure (Azure services and VM's)
  • Design and implement data migration procedures
  • Support DevOps data deployments and automation
  • Provide expert level support for critical customer issues (SQL Server, Azure SQL, Cassandra, some Oracle).
  • Serve as a vocal proponent of industry best practices and lead by example.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science
  • Eight (8) or more years of progressive experience in administering, developing, and deploying Microsoft SQL Server databases
  • Experience in designing and maintaining OLTP and OLAP data architectures
  • Excellent trouble shooting skills. Responds to and resolves SQL Server database performance issues escalated out of customer service
  • Extensive experience writing T-SQL, stored procedures, functions, and a deep understanding of query tuning techniques on high transaction systems
  • Experienced in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) package development and performance tuning, system integration, package, and project deployment
  • Proficient with SQL server profiler, Query Store, and extended events for monitoring and troubleshooting database activity and performance
  • Knowledge of the software development life cycle including agile and test-driven development database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures
  • Experience in architecture and providing technical leadership to large and complex systems
  • Self-motivated and ability to work with little supervision
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

 Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in computer science or equivalent
  • Experience in one or more databases such as MySQL, Oracle, Cassandra, Mongo, or Cosmos
  • Experience using the Azure marketplace including resource creation, cost management, appropriate security measures, and tool selection for a variety of data movement situations.
  • Experience using and developing Java JVM configuration, Linux (Debian, RHEL) and languages including BASH, .net C#, R, Python, Scala, CQL, Powershell
  • Knowledge of big data terminology such as CAP, Map Reduce, Distributed Computing and toolsets including Spark, Solr, Azure Search, and Databricks
  • Creation of models for new database development and/or changes to existing ones.
  • Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets
  • Ability to plan and coordinate data migrations between systems
  • Ability to develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to databases through Redgate SQL change automation
  • Strong understanding of security standards and best practices
