What does an Computer Technician do at companies like CITY OF GRAND ISLAND?

Perform semi-skilled and skilled technical work in the maintenance, installation, repair, networking, training, and technical support for Servers, PCs, network infrastructure and peripherals. 

Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers. 

 

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.

 

Insure compliance of PC software Licensing.

 

Develop IT policy recommendations including computer/network use and purchases of hardware and software.

 

Responsible for research, recommendations, installation, maintenance and disposal of electronic equipment. 

 

Pull and configure network wiring for devices attached to the network. 

 

Support City and Utility divisions, including 24/7 operations such as Police, Fire and 911 Dispatch Center.

 

Maintain and troubleshoot wireless networks.

 

Maintain a variety of records regarding computer operations including inventory, problem documentation, emails and actions taken.

 

Generate reports for user departments; review input material.

 

Responsible for the setup of all types of technology based devices and adding them to the network with proper operating systems installed.  

 

Maintain and troubleshoot phone system.

 

Maintain a working knowledge of software being used by departments.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
 
Variety of software products being used by different departments within the City.
 
Network-security of hardware and peripheral equipment.
 
Basic and advanced principles of network, server and computer technology.
 
Understanding of virus and malware removal.
 
Modern office procedures, methods, and technology equipment.
 
Basic principles and practices of electricity and electronics.
 
Ability to:
 
Work a flexible schedule of evening and day hours as needed. 
 
Diagnose and solve hardware, software and security problems.
 
Must have a personal vehicle for traveling to various remote locations throughout the workday.
 
Sit for prolonged periods up to 50%-75% per day.
 
Work overhead (i.e. pulling cable in ceiling panels).
 
Maintain confidentiality in the performance of duties.
 
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
 
Meet schedules and timelines for production output.
 
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
 
Maintain records and documentation of work.
 
Operate servers, computers and peripheral equipment.
 
Learn and create procedures necessary for system backup.
 Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Extensive network technology system experience and formal specialized training courses and continuing education. Two years of responsible experience in working with network technologies, as well as a variety of associated software and hardware peripherals for the network.

Training:

Equivalent to Associates Degree with major coursework in Computer Science or a related field, supplemented by specialized training with technology, networks and software. Minimum two years of hands on experience with information technology systems.

License or Certification:
 
Employee must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain insurability as determined by the City’s insurance carrier.  

Working Hours:

Position will work 40 hours per week during regular business hours.  Working after hours may be required but is dependent upon department needs.  

Salary:

Position will start at the entry level of the City's salary table.  Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications.
