Performs intermediate protective service work in fire suppression and providing emergency medical treatment including but not limited to medical emergencies, trauma emergencies, patient transports, and medical care to sick and injured patients. Plans, organizes, directs and controls fire/rescue and medical service functions within applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations; does related work as required. Work is performed under emergency conditions and involves an element of personal danger. Work is performed under regular supervision of a Fire Officer.

This position acts as a first responder to all types of emergency situations. The incumbent responds to alarms, drives equipment, provides basic emergency medical service (or advanced medical service in the case of a paramedic), and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work. The incumbent also responds to emergency calls and administers first aid; observes patient responses and maintains accurate and complete records (or in the case of the paramedic, assumes command of situations related to patient and/or medical care), ensures that equipment is fully prepared and functional at all times, and that adequate supplies are available for treatment; performs general maintenance and upkeep of apparatus, equipment and fire station; assists with fire prevention inspections and pre-fire planning; and participates in continuing education, training, and instruction programs by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
The incumbent must possess knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics as applied to fire suppression; knowledge of the principles of anatomy, physiology and chemistry in relation to the respiratory and circulatory systems; knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment, automobile extraction and transportation; and knowledge of the street system and geography of the City. The incumbent must also have the ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques, and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; the ability to operate medical equipment and other emergency vehicles; the ability to read and interpret manuals, policies and other documents; the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates and the general public; and the ability to keep records and prepare reports.
High school graduation or its equivalent. Possession of a valid Florida driver license. Must be State of Florida Certified Firefighter and possess a Florida EMT or Paramedic certification. Applicants with a Florida Paramedic certification are preferred. Must meet and maintain all requirements for position as established by the City and the State of Florida.

Oviedo Fire/Rescue is an active Fire Department that participates in numerous community based functions, provides continual training opportunities, and responds to over 4,000 calls per year. Oviedo Fire/Rescue also holds a Class 2 ISO rating. The Department currently operates out of two stations which house three Engines, two Rescues, one Battalion Chief, and other specialty equipment.
